Abstract

Praca Autorek uderza w "czułą strunę" wielu osób zajmujących się formalną i nieformalną edukacją historyczną, którzy chcą opowiadać dzieje ludzkości z uwzględnieniem "wszystkich" aktorów życia społecznego.

Abstract

This book is an ethnographic study of reception centers and support services for asylum seekers in Bologna, Italy. Starting from an anthropological perspective, it explores the intersubjective construction of a set of legal categories (i.e., asylum seeker or refugee), to show their implementation and transformation in the everyday life of individuals and institutions. At the same time, this research sheds light on the inherent complexity of asylum seekers’ life experiences, which are embedded in a multiplicity of dimensions – political, affective, historical – often overlooked by contemporary asylum systems.

Abstract

Who controls the land and minerals in the former Bantustans of South Africa - chiefs, the state or landholders? Disputes are taking place around the ownership of resources, decisions about their exploitation and who should benefit. With respect to all of these issues, the courts have become increasingly important. The contributors to Land, Law and Chiefs in Rural South Africa capture some of these intense contestations over land, law and political authority, focussing on threats to the rights of ordinary people. History and customary law feature strongly in most disputes and succession to chieftaincy is also frequently disputed. Judges have to make decisions in a context where rival claimants to property or office assert their own versions of history and custom. The South African constitution recognises customary law and the courts are attempting to incorporate and develop this branch of jurisprudence as 'living customary law'. Lawyers, community leaders and academics are called on to assist in researching cases around restitution, land rights and customary law. The chapters in this collection discuss legal cases and policy directions that have evolved since 1994. Some chapters analyse the increasing power of chiefs in the South African rural areas, while others suggest that the courts are giving support to popular rights over land and supporting local democratic processes. Contributors record significant pushback from groups that reject traditional authority. These political tensions are a central theme of the collection and thus serve as vital case studies in furthering our understanding of rights and restitution in South Africa.

Abstract

"The Anthropology of Parliaments offers a fresh, comparative approach to analysing Parliaments and democratic politics, drawing together rare ethnographic work by anthropologists and politics scholars from around the world. Crewe's insights deepen our understanding of the complexity of political institutions. She reveals how elected politicians navigate relationships by forging alliances and thwarting opponents; parliamentary buildings are constructed as sites of work, debate and the nation in miniature; and politicians and officials engage with hierarchies, continuity and change. This book also proposes how to study parliaments through an anthropological lens while in conversation with other disciplines. The dive into ethnographies from across Europe, the US, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa demolishes hackneyed geo-political categories and culminates in a new comparative theory about the contradictions in everyday political work. This important book will be of interest to anyone studying parliaments but especially those in the disciplines of anthropology and sociology; politics, legal and development studies; and international relations"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Abstract

“This is intellectual history at its best from one of India’s foremost feminist historians. V. Geetha pursues a recursive method as she maps the coordinates of Ambedkar’s vision of time and the ethical across his theorization of caste, colonial rule, labor, social reproduction and religion. In the context of several interlocutors and historical moments, with sparklingly clear prose, she shows how socialism was a ‘spectral presence’ in his thought as he worked to create forms of epistemic, ontological and socio-political rupture with the order of caste and untouchability.” —Smriti Srinivas, Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Davis, USA This book offers a reading of Bhimrao Ambedkar’s engagement with the idea and practice of socialism in India by linking it to his lifelong political and philosophical concerns: the annihilation of the caste system, untouchability and the moral and philosophical systems that justify either. Rather than view his ideas through a socialist lens, the author suggests that it is important to measure the validity of socialist thought and practice in the Indian context, through his critique of the social totality. The book argues its case by presenting a broad and connected overview of his thought world and the global and local influences that shaped it. The themes that are taken up for discussion include: his understanding of the colonial rule and the colonial state; history and progress; nationalism and the questions he posed the socialists; his radical critique of the caste system and Brahmancal philosophies, and his unusual interpretation of Buddhism. V. Geetha is an independent scholar based in Chennai, India.
